A Thing About Online Translators

More than a decade ago, all you can see in the web are pages in the internet which are written in English. Which was good really, since it was rather easy to understand everything. But, once the world got hold of the web, pages written in every national dialect soon entered the scene. Nowadays, you can even read pages written on every imaginable local dialect (even several totally different variations of English) online.

This, of course, does not mean that they are a bad idea. In fact, this is actually a very good idea, as it will greatly diversify the contents of the internet. However, there is just one catch. Those who can read even a single word in these languages will be pretty much on a dead end when they are trying to get information.

Luckily there is an easy solution, you can always resort to translators to do the job. And two of the most common translators used by many people for online reading is Google Translate and Yahoo!’s Babel Fish. As you can see from their names, these are provided by two of the most popular search engines that are being used by web surfers today.

Yahoo’s Babel Fish came in first, though it is not actually the first translator of its kind to be used for online pages. The technology behind Babel Fish was derived from an earlier translator called Systran, which was developed for military purposes, but is now being used by many commercial translators (including Bing Translator).

On the other hand, Google Translate was first released in the early 2000’s. Though it initially also used the Systran software used by other translators, like Babel Fish, Google soon developed its own language translation system. Today, Google Translate has the widest range of language translations available and is integrable onto several browsers like Firefox and Google’s own Chrome.

So we come to that all important question, which one is better to use? The Babel Fish provides a convenient translation for all those quick works. On the other hand, Google Translate/ offer a wider variety of language options, which allows you to move in from English, but also from other languages as well.

You also need to take note that these translators do have their limits. While the two will be able to give you a fairly accurate word for word translation, they will often not give you an exact translation. Exact in the sense that you will not get the actual meaning of the page as have been intended by the creator. But since these are good enough, you can still get it from there. It would also be a good idea to make use of both of them at the same time in order to compare them and get a more accurate translation.
